Voter turnout in District elections has been declining, with just 19% of registered voters participating in the 2018 primary and only 46% in the 2018 general election. Technology exists to make voting easier, more accessible, and importantly, more secure and verifiable for voters with disabilities – but the DC council must take action now to implement it.
Additionally, digital voting increases ballot access for voters who have faced barriers to their ballots such as voters with disabilities and military voters. It will help reduce wait times at polling locations and ensure that every voter is able to cast their ballot, regardless of ability, location, or circumstance. Hundreds of jurisdictions across ten states have piloted digital voting since 2018. And audits of the systems used in those pilots proved that ballots were cast safely.
